Occupational Safety and Health and Workforce Skills as Complementary Predictors of Employee Performance in High-Risk Construction Services

Purpose of the study: This study aims to examine and analyze the partial and simultaneous effects of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) and skill on employee performance at PT. Lutvindo Wijaya Perkasa, a construction-services company based in Pekanbaru, Indonesia, and to identify which of the two predictors exerts the dominant influence.
Methodology: A quantitative, explanatory (associative) design was employed. The population consisted of 92 permanent employees, and a saturated (census) sampling technique produced a final analytic sample of 82 valid respondents after data screening. Data were collected using a structured, five-point Likert questionnaire that had been tested for validity (Pearson product-moment correlation) and reliability (Cronbach's alpha). Multiple linear regression, classical assumption tests, the coefficient of determination (R²), partial t-tests, and the simultaneous F-test were used for analysis with SPSS version 26.
Results: Both OSH (β = 0.372, t = 4.681, p < 0.001) and skill (β = 0.441, t = 5.529, p < 0.001) had a positive and statistically significant partial effect on employee performance. Simultaneously, OSH and skill significantly influenced employee performance (F = 74.216, p < 0.001), jointly explaining 65.3% of the variance in performance (adjusted R² = 0.653), while the remaining 34.7% was explained by variables outside the model. Skill emerged as the dominant predictor.
Conclusions: Occupational safety and health and employee skill are significant, complementary drivers of employee performance in a high-risk construction-services setting. Managerial investment in structured safety systems alongside targeted, competency-based training is recommended to sustain performance improvement.
